Why you would love sheet vinyl flooring

When it came to the US market in the 1930s, sheet vinyl flooring was praised for its high performance and affordability. It was considered an economy product but, over the years, technology has been responsible for its evolution as a high style product. Vinyl falls under the “resilient” label, meaning that it falls somewhere between a hard and soft surface. While it’s firm, it also has a ‘“bounce back” quality.

What is sheet vinyl?

Standard sheet vinyl: These are thin supple sheets of vinyl fused with printed design (image layer). It is a realistic mimic of wood, tile, and stone with a large assortment of colors, patterns, and designs. Images are taken with 3D photography so they’re clear and vibrant and, thanks to modern technology, there are embossing capabilities for added depth, dimension, and textured appearances. Finishes come in matte, gloss, and high-gloss colors.

This vinyl flooring comes in six-foot or 12-foot wide rolls, which means it can be installed with few seams. Some feel that makes it a little easier to install since there’s less worry about lining seams up evenly. Although this floor is normally installed with a glue-down bond, it can be installed as a floating floor that hovers over the subfloor without nails or glue. Be sure to ask your vinyl flooring retailer to show you samples. They're also available as tiles and are either glued or come with a pre-attached adhesive backing that makes it “peel and stick.”

How is it different from luxury vinyl flooring (LVF)?

Luxury is a newer version that was introduced to the market in the 1970s and rose to popularity in the 1980s. This is the prestige product and the vinyl is thicker and completely impervious to liquid. Although the style is similar this has more design options, such as the ability to be cut into planks (LVP) or square, groutable tile-sized pieces (LVT). Many feel the extra seams add to the realism and some go even further by using grout with the LVT version. Installation here is the floating floor technique; the pieces click together like a puzzle. They form a mat that hovers over a clean, dry, and level subfloor with no glue or adhesives.
